The first Fantasy films that spring to mind are the old Disney animated films. Bambi, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty all captured my attention as a child. Especially Sleeping Beauty with the fairies. While Aela, the fairy in my books, doesn’t resemble her counterparts, she does probably owe her existence to them. I’m sure those flitty little characters influenced my subconscious.
More recent favorites include the Harry Potter series, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. The special effects have brought beloved characters from the latter two to life in a way I never imagined when I first read the books.
For Sci Fi, we turn to the pivotal film that made a huge impression on me - Star Wars. I’m talking about the original - before it got numbers and a subtitle attached to it. I remember how I sat in amazement at that opening sequence, with that gigantic ship moving across the screen. Here’s that opening sequence so you can see what I mean. It was love at first sight for me!
From that point on, I was hooked - from Alien, Bladerunner and E.T. to more recent additions like Avatar, Gravity and the new Star Trek movies - this list could go on for days. Or even weeks.
And I’m sure SF influenced my writing. Science fiction elements crept into my books, taking them into a cross-genre blend of Urban Fantasy and Sci Fi, with heavy Paranormal influences. The Modern Magics series chronicles what happens when magic returns to Earth. And the creatures of myth are merely beings from other worlds.
