And then there’s her mysterious neighbour, Sam...who seems to know more about her history than she does herself. When Ocean finally steps into the salty waves with Sam, she realizes that her life has been based on a lie, and that she is missing something...something she never knew existed.
Brenda Corey Dunne’s Skin is a fun YA Fantasy. Ocean, our protagonist, is so likeable. Dunne does a great job of capturing the teen voice and Ocean is a great reflection of that. Adding to the mix is a mysterious past, a loving family, and, of course, a spot of magic. (Well, more than a spot, actually quite a lot, but “spot” sounded good.)
At any rate, this is a wonderfully written book. I would gear it toward the younger end of YA, but I tend to read a lot of gritty books. Older teens and adults will enjoy it as well. This is very much a modern fairy tale.
